I am ressurecting my old abandoned blog space to get back in practice. Life has certainly changed in the last 12 years since I posted last. I started my own business and I am super stoked about it even after 4 years! My new profession is soapmaking, but that isn't all. I make bath bombs, soap, shower gel, lip balms, lotions and most things bath and body. I even make wax melts for scentsy type burners.
So, what is involved in such a business? Well, a good grasp of chemistry, mingled with a whole bunch of mathmatical equasions and an artistic flare, a lot of experimentation and more research than I ever thought possible. A good nose for blending scents helps too, but I think the most challenging part is figuring out what the next big craze is going to be. A challenge for any business owner is how to make what you love doing profitable and sustainable. I refer to this endeavor as my planned retirement. I work hard to grow at a sustainable pace... not too fast and not stagnating.
Finding an educational and support base is the most valuable step I have taken. I joined the Handcrafted Soap and Cosmetic Guild. I go to conferences and conventions (who knew?) And I share what I have learned with others. The soapmaking community worldwide is a very giving group of people. They are eager to share new techniques, knowledge and all the tips and tricks of the trade. The suppliers I use are top notch in support, product and variety. I have to say, I love the amazing people I have met through soapmaking. I learn something from each and every one of them. Of course some more than others.
Goals are so important. One of my biggest goals is to open a brick and mortar shop someday. I also enjoy teaching. I love the idea of people getting together to learn something new and fun, especially if I get to facillitate it! Maybe one day people will associate my brand or my name with learning something fun. I also want to get my certifications with the Handcrafted Soap and Cosmetic Guild. I am taking my first test in May at the national conference. I chickened out at the last conference even though I have never scored below a 95% on the practice tests. This time I am going to make myself just do it. Then I can move on to the advanced certifications and I won't be as nervous about them.
So stay tuned for some tutorial blogs on different products or ingredients. Who really knows where this will go, but I am going to commit to sharing about this journey I am on. Maybe I can inspire someone to pursue their dream or teach someone something that enhances their life just a little bit. That would be the best outcome I can think of.
